Window Replacement Tax CreditsTax CreditThe new US Government Stimulus Package (www.irs.gov) provides up to a $1,500.00 tax credit to homeowners for having energy-efficient replacement windows installed in their homes in the years 2009-2010. Franca Services offers different styles/manufactures for products that qualify for Energy Star/NRFC rates. There are several advantages to purchasing energy-efficient windows for your home.
How to QualifyIn order to qualify for the tax credit under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009, homeowners need to purchase windows and doors that have performance ratings equal to or below a U-factor and SHGC determined to the region where homeowners resides. What Else Should You Know?Energy Star www.energystar.gov is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. At Energy Star website you can learn more about performance ratings, performance zone and the performance criteria for your region. The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) www.nfrc.org is a nonprofit organization that administers the industry's only uniform, independent rating and labeling system for the energy performance of windows, doors and skylights. The ratings listed on the NFRC label allows you to measure and compare energy performance on similar products. Check out NFRC website to see if the manufacturer you are considering is under NFRC Certification Program Participants. NFRC Energy Performance Label Understanding the Energy Star and NFRC RatingsTo understand U-Factor and SHGC and how they work, look at the graphic below. U-factor is the measurement of thermal transmission, or thermal resistance. The U-factor measures the rate of heat transfer through a product. Therefore, the lower the U-factor, the lower the amount of heat loss, and the better a product it is at insulating a building/house. In other words, a low U-Factor is better at keeping the warm air inside your home during the winter and keeping the hot air outside during the summer. SHGC - Solar Heat Gain Coefficient is the measurement of the amount of solar radiation, or sunlight, that passes through the window. The lower a window's solar heat gain coefficient, the less solar heat it transmits. Generally in New England, it is more energy efficient to allow the solar heat through your windows as much as possible during the winter months to help heat your home and save energy.
