Avoid this Scenario by Using James Hardie Weather Barrier

Not all James Hardie installers in MA would be able to handle this next project, as it is a prime example of the challenges often encountered when working on antiquated homes. This Marlborough MA customer presented us with such a challenge when he wanted to replace the old wood shingles on his 120 year old Victorian home with new fiber cement siding.
Once the old siding was stripped, we discovered a disintegrated vapor barrier, which is designed to establish an air and water resistant barrier beneath the sheathing and exterior siding. Back in the days when this structure was erected, vapor barrier was nothing more than brown paper like the kind you see used in a deli, and it simply couldn’t withstand the New England weather over the years.
Not surprisingly, the plywood behind the old vapor barrier was rotted far beyond repair, so we proceed to replace the wood before we began installing highly effective James HardieWrap Weather Barrier. This innovative product performs much better than other traditional vapor barriers, and it allows a perfect balance of breathability and water resistance, which allows the foundational walls to remain dry.
Finally, we were able to successfully install the James HardieShingles Straight Edge profile with 7-inch exposure in the Harris Cream shade. As you can see from the photos, this project was quite involved, but the customer was delighted with his new look and very happy to have his beautiful home restored to its original splendor.
Keep in mind that regardless of which siding you choose for your home, that your contractor takes the time to make necessary repairs and that they properly install the vapor barrier to ensure its efficacy. Anything less could allow water to penetrate the siding causing costly water damage or mildew. Additionally, it could ultimately decrease the longevity of your siding and may void the generous warranty that accompanies Hardieplank Siding.
